FAIR TRADE.
We work within the FINE Criteria, via The Fairtrade Foundation, and via NEWS/BAFTS.

Fair Trade

PRODUCER'S VIEWPOINT

Every single positive decision to buy Fairtrade produce or Fair Trade products makes a difference.
Fair Trade – Pays the farmer a living wage
Fair Trade – Makes a long term commitment to trade enabling the farmers to plan for the future, and to afford schooling for their children
Fair Trade – enables the farmers to keep going, rather than leave the land and go to the city
Fair Trade – enables the farmers or plantation workers to work without pesticides and fertiliser, reducing health problems, and lowering costs
Fair Trade - is better for the environment, hand farming is more careful than mechanised farming. (See the report in the recent RSPB magazine, shade grown coffee protects the species)
Fair Trade - is auditable and verifiable, there is nothing to hide.
Fair Trade - builds independence, accountability, and skills
Fair Trade – builds a genuine hope for a better future

CONSUMER'S VIEWPOINT

Fair Trade – provides the best of the best for the rich western consumer (me and you)
Fair Trade - is auditable and verifiable, there is nothing to hide.

What is Fair Trade?

- our definition is widely accepted in UK, and we work within the Fairtrade Foundation Guidelines.

"FINE" is an acronym of acronyms. Oh boy.
FINE = FLO, IFAT, NEWS EFTA
FLO = Fairtrade Labelling Organisations.
IFAT = International Federation for Alternative Trade
NEWS = Network of European World Shops
EFTA = European Fair Trade Association.

BAFTS = British Association for Fair Trade Shops
BAFTS is a member of NEWS
OK?

So what is Fairtrade?

We use the published FINE criteria as the basis, and in practical terms, a product is Fairtrade if :
It bears the Fairtrade label.

The Fairtrade Label

If it has been imported by an established Fairtrade organisation such as Traidcraft or Oxfam
If it has been imported by a group registered by the BAFTS Importers Directory or by IFAT.

We accept that there are many groups with products slightly outside this definition who are doing "good work" in many places. We encourage them all to comply with the FINE criteria and to become "certified Fair Trade" organisations.
